COMMUNITY WILDFIRE

PROTECTION PLAN

A Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP) is defined by the 2003 Healthy Forest Restoration Act (HFRA) as a plan for an at-risk community that: (1) is developed collaboratively, (2) identifies and prioritizes fuel reduction projects, and (3) recommends measures to reduce the ignitability of structures. The 2019 Mammoth Lakes CWPP was developed by the Mammoth Lakes Fire Protection District in collaboration with the Town of Mammoth Lakes, the United States Forest Service and the Mammoth Lakes Fire Safe Council. It includes a current analysis of the probability of a severe fire and its effects, and offers solutions and mitigation recommendations for residents, fire personnel and community planning officials. It also helps clarify priorities for the protection of life, property and critical infrastructure in the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI).

Learn How to Decrease the Risk of Wildfire

The risk of wildfire in Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) areas is extremely high. The WUI is the zone where structures and other human development meet and intermingle with undeveloped wildland areas and vegetative fuels. The WUI poses tremendous risks to life, property and infrastructure, and is one of the most dangerous and complicated areas in which to fight fires. Residents in WUI zones are encouraged to protect their homes and property by creating and maintaining defensible space. Defensible space is the only way to prepare for the unexpected.
